WhatsApp fake voice messages

A number of clients have reported receiving what appears to be a WhatsApp audio message in their email. Shortly after clicking to play the file, their entire contact list received the same email. This appears to be a browser-based Javascript exploit.

Marking the messages as spam may result in legitimate emails from your contacts getting filtered in the future (because it is coming from their email address). I would recommend creating an email filter to stop these messages from spreading. Here are instructions for Gmail:

  1. Open Gmail.
  2. Click the gear in the top right.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Click the Filters tab.
  5. Click “Create a new filter” near the bottom centre of the page.
  6. Enter (without quotes) “*If you cannot open it, move this message to the “Inbox” folder.” in “Has the words”
  7. Click “Create filter with this search”
  8. Check “Delete it” and click “Create filter”
