If you are seeing a folder with a question mark on it when you startup your Macbook o it is unable to read system files from hard drive. This can mean a faulty hard drive cable, or more likely, a hard drive corruption or failure. If you have dropped your Macbook (especially while it is on) or it is five years or older, hard disk failure is likely. If you hard drive is making clicking or grinding noises, you will certainly need to replace your damaged hard drive.
